gir,
I am directed by Mr. Secretary Bevin to refer to your letter of the 11th August and to confirm that your new permanent address has been registered in this Department.

I am to state that whether it will be possible to present a claim to the Japanese Government in respect of your "personal injury" or the "war damage losses" you have sustained will depend on the provisions of the eventual settlement with Japan, of which it is not possible yet to make any reliable forecast. His Majesty's Government cannot themselves undertake to pay compensation in respect of such personal injury or losses and no authority exists under which advances could be made out of British public funds against any compensation which may ultimately be recoverable from the Japanese Government under the terms of the settlement with them.
